United to win: US allocates $182 mln to demine Ukraine

The USA provided Ukraine with 182 million dollars for removing landmines in areas of Ukraine affected by the full-scale war.

The US Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, reported this.

The American ambassador pointed out that the full-scale invasion of Russia resulted in 1/3 of Ukraine's territory being heavily mined.

The ambassador emphasized that this presents a risk to both Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.

"We are proud that today's assistance to the State Special Transport Service will allow Ukraine to save more lives and support its economic recovery," Brink said.

It should be noted that on July 16, the American company Tetra Tech, which is the executor of one of the projects of international technical assistance to Ukraine, financed by the Governments of the United States and Canada, handed over to the State Special Transport Service (SSTS):

  • four GCS-100 demining machines with a set of attached equipment,
  • tractors for transporting these machines,
  • JCB excavators,
  • minibuses for staff.

The total cost of the purchased equipment amounted to more than $5.8 million.

In addition to machinery and equipment, Tetra Tech is also handing over to the State Special Transport Service a set of personal protective equipment for sappers who will work with demining machines. SSTS specialists who will work with demining machines have received training at the Tetra Tech school, which operates in Ukraine.

Part of the equipment purchased by the partners was made in Ukraine, including:

  • personal protective equipment,
  • carriages for transporting demining machines,
  • reservation of excavators.

For reference:

It's worth noting that, as of June 29, 30,000 square kilometers of formerly occupied Ukrainian land had been declared clear of explosive devices. This is over 17% more than the initial estimated level of contamination.

Moreover, Türkiye, Bulgaria, and Romania have already destroyed six mines and discovered many fragments of missile weapons during the demining of the Black Sea area.
