Rebuilding Ukraine: Germany pledges €10 mln for restoring Okhmatdyt children’s hospital destroyed by Russian missile strike

Germany will allocate 10 million euros for the reconstruction of the capital's "Okhmatdit" children's hospital, which Russia destroyed by a missile attack on July 8.

According to Deutsche Welle, the German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Schulze, stated this.

As mentioned, the assigned funds and contributions from other donors will be used to expedite the hospital's restoration and make necessary preparations for its functioning during the winter season.

Specifically, this pertains to the maintenance and repair of:

  • hospital exteriors,
  • treatment areas,
  • electrical and heating systems.

As Shultze noted, the destruction of the children's hospital shows "how ruthlessly and inhumanely Russia is waging this aggressive war."

"We should not and will not put up with the fact that this place of healing for children with cancer no longer exists in Ukraine," the minister added.

Earlier, Germany declared that it was ready to accept children from Okhmatdyt for treatment.

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach was among the first to say that his country is ready to accept sick Ukrainian children from Wednesday, July 10.

"I promised the Minister of Health of Ukraine, Viktor Liashko, that we would accept sick children who need it at any time, and the next rescue flight leaves on Wednesday. With his targeted attack on the children's hospital, Putin once again showed that he is a war criminal," the minister's statement reads.

Also, the United States of America, as well as several European countries, have declared their readiness to accept Ukrainian children for treatment.

For reference:

On the morning of July 8, Russian troops launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine. Defense forces shot down 30 out of 38 enemy rockets.

The Russians, in particular, targeted the Okhmatdyt children's hospital. At the time of the attack, 627 children were there. The head of the Ministry of Health, Viktor Liashko, said that the Russian attack fell on the toxicology building, where children were receiving dialysis.

As a result of the attack on the medical facility, two people were killed, and another 50 were injured. Later, a boy who was affected by the attack also died in the hospital.

Immediately after the impact, caring people arrived at the hospital, helping to clear the rubble and bringing water and food.

The state has already promised to rebuild the hospital — the government allocated 100 million hryvnias for priority restoration work. In addition, caring people donated 300 million hryvnias for Okhmatdyt in 41 hours. The government of Ukraine received "a large number of requests" from various countries that were ready to accept children from the hospital.

In the meantime, propaganda resources began to spread information that it was Ukraine that fired at its own children's hospital. However, Ukrainian investigators showed evidence that a Russian Kh-101 missile was launched at the facility.
