The Belgian Presidency of the EU reported that on Twitter.
"The ambassadors of the EU countries have just agreed on a powerful and substantial 14th package of sanctions in response to Russian aggression against Ukraine," the message reads.
At the same time, it is emphasized that the new package provides for new targeted measures and maximizes the impact of existing sanctions, closing loopholes.
As reported, officials from 27 EU countries discussed the new package of sanctions for more than a month. The new measures include a ban on the transshipment of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a plan to hold EU operators accountable for sanctions violations by subsidiaries and partners in third countries.
Reuters, citing EU diplomats, wrote that Germany allegedly blocked the package, despite the fact that a clause that Berlin considered problematic had been removed.
It should be noted that on June 12, the United States introduced more than 300 new sanctions against more than 300 individuals and legal entities in Russia and in the countries of Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.
After the imposition of American sanctions, the Moscow Stock Exchange announced the suspension of dollar and euro trades from June 13 and the suspension of all trades in instruments settled in dollars and euros.
For reference:
Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has already introduced 13 packages of sanctions aimed at weakening the Russian economy and military capabilities. Work on the 14th package of sanctions is in full swing, and it is expected to include new restrictions against 21 Russian companies.
As reported, the latest 13th package of sanctions was approved by the Council of the EU in February on the eve of the anniversary of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
It provided for restrictions against 106 people and 88 legal entities "responsible for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine."
The main focus of these sanctions were on the military and defense sectors of Russia, as well as individuals involved in purchasing missiles from the DPRK. They also targeted those responsible for forcibly removing and subjecting Ukrainian children to military "re-education."
Also, on February 23, the United States of America introduced a large-scale package of sanctions against Russia for its military aggression in Ukraine. Hundreds of legal entities fell under the restrictions.
In addition, Canada introduced new sanctions against the Russian Federation. A number of defense plants, a seaport and an assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, came under the restrictions.
The authorities of Switzerland announced their accession to the 13th package of EU sanctions against Russia, approving both the expansion of the sanctions list and the restrictive trade measures provided for by it.
