South Korea to reconsider arms supply to Ukraine following Putin’s pact with Kim Jong Un

South Korea is considering providing weapons to Ukraine following the signing of a mutual defense agreement between North Korea and Russia.

In an official statement, Seoul also condemned the agreement signed by Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, saying it violated United Nations sanctions.

"The government clearly emphasizes that any cooperation that directly or indirectly helps North Korea increase its military power is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and is subject to monitoring and sanctions by the international community," the president's office said in a statement.

The statement also says that such a violation will worsen Seoul's relations with Moscow.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin arrived in North Korea on June 19, local time. This was his first visit to the DPRK in 24 years.

Reuters writes that on the eve of the visit, Putin issued a presidential decree, which stated that Moscow seeks to sign a "comprehensive strategic partnership agreement" with North Korea.

The square was filled with thousands of spectators, including children with balloons and people wearing T-shirts with the red, white, and blue colors of the Russian and North Korean flags.

The two leaders held a meeting at Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Un expressed his "full support" for Russia in its war against Ukraine. In turn, Putin expressed his admiration for "how Pyongyang has transformed over the past 24 years."

The two parties focused on fostering economic cooperation, specifically by coordinating trade and financial exchanges between them. This is in response to their arms deals and military cooperation, which are in violation of UN Security Council resolutions prohibiting North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.
