Ukrainian athlete Mahuchikh secures European high jump champion title for second time

Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the Ukrainian high jump champion, successfully defended her title at the European Championships in Rome. She had previously won the championship in 2022.

Mahuchikh began her final performance with a height of 1.90 m and then gradually cleared 1.95 m, 1.97 m, and 1.99 m before ultimately succeeding on her second attempt at 2.01 m.

She surpassed the Serbian Angelina Topić (1.97 m) in the battle for victory.

This is Yaroslava's second victory at the continental championship. She won the Euro for the first time in 2022.

Besides Mahuchikh, there are two other finalists in the competition: Ukrainian Iryna Herashchenko and Serbian Angelina Topić.

The defending champion confidently retained their title, clearing a height of 2.01 meters on their second attempt. However, the Serbian competitor could not match this mark.

Herashchenko could not surpass the Serb and was ultimately eliminated from the competition after failing to clear the bar set at 1.95 meters.

Therefore, Mahuchikh became the first high jumper in history to win more than two top honors at the European Championships.

Spanish Ruth Beitia and Romanian Yolanda Balash had achieved the same feat three times before.

Additionally, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, a Ukrainian high jumper, was the only athlete to clear 2.00 m and claimed the gold medal at the "Diamond League" event in Brussels in March.

In January in Cottbus, Germany, the athlete set a competition record and the best result of the season in the world at the World Track and Field Tour stage in the "bronze" category.

Moreover, in September, the Ukrainian track and field athlete triumphed at the world championships after winning two silver medals. For the first time in her career, she became the world champion in the high jump and the second Ukrainian woman to win this title.

Mahuchikh also took home the high jump title in the 2023 Diamond League, setting a new season record.
