Ukrainian high jumpers shine at 2024 Stockholm Diamond League: Yaroslava Mahuchikh takes first place, Iryna Herashchenko earns bronze
Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh dominated the "Diamond League" event in Sweden, reaching a height of two meters. Another Ukrainian high jumper, Iryna Herashchenko, ended the competition with a bronze medal.
"Suspilne.Sport" reports this.
Yaroslava Mahuchikh, a track and field athlete from Ukraine, claimed the gold medal at the Stockholm stage of the Diamond League. She dominated the high jump event, successfully clearing the two-meter bar on her second try.
Yaroslava missed the first two heights and immediately took the bars of 1.90 and 1.94 m. The Ukrainian athlete conquered the height of 1.97 only on the third attempt.
At the same time, Mahuchikh cleared the two-meter bar for the second time. The final outcome was determined by various factors.
Mahuchikh became the only track and field athlete who conquered the height of 2.00 m.
German Imke Onnen took second place, overcoming 1.94 m.
In turn, another Ukrainian, Iryna Herashchenko, overcame the mark of 1.94 m and took third place.
In a first for the series, three Ukrainian women competed in the high jump simultaneously during this season. Yuliia Levchenko and Iryna Herashchenko, both medalists in the May competition in Doha, participated in their second event of the year.
Currently, this is Yaroslava Mahuchikh's 14th victory at the Diamond League level.
For reference:
The Diamond League is an athletics competition founded in 2010 by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The Diamond League replaced another series of competitions, the Golden League, which started from 1998 to 2009.
As reported, Ukrainian jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh was among the 11 nominees for the prestigious "World's Best Track and Field Athlete-2023" award, which the International Athletics Federation determined.
It should be noted that in March in Brussels, the Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who became the only athlete to overcome the height of 2.00 m, won a gold medal at the "Diamond League" stage.
In addition, in September, the Ukrainian track and field athlete triumphed at the world championships after winning two silver medals. For the first time in her career, she became the world champion in the high jump and the second Ukrainian woman to win this title.
