Lviv to introduce first barrier-free railway station in Ukraine

The railway station reconstruction project was presented in Lviv. It will become the first barrier-free railway station in Ukraine.

Maksym Kozytskyi, the head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, announced this on Facebook, Rubryka reports.

What is the problem?

Today, more than three million people have disabilities, so accessibility should be a key principle in reconstruction.

Lviv train station is the second busiest in Ukraine.

"Internally displaced Ukrainians arrive almost every day, in particular people with disabilities and the elderly who need additional assistance. Medical and psychological care volunteers are forced to make great efforts to meet and guide them around the territory," Kozytskyi added.

What is the solution?

In Lviv, on May 31, a railway station reconstruction project was presented, according to which it will become the first barrier-free station in Ukraine.

It is intended to be reconstructed and equipped for the needs of people with disabilities and other groups with reduced mobility.

How does it work?

"The main railway station in Lviv will be Ukraine's first fully barrier-free station," Kozytskyi informed.

According to him, the main entrance to the station will be made more accessible by:

• rebuilding high platforms,
• equipping elevators so that people with limited mobility can get to the trains without hindrance,
• creating new restrooms,
• restoring tunnels.

Currently, together with experts, they are developing the project concept and looking for financing. Ukrainian railway company Ukrzaliznytsia hopes to attract grant funds to implement this idea.

It is assumed that the project's implementation will take three to five years.

This will happen in several queues so the station does not stop receiving passengers.

The head of the administration emphasized that this project is vital.

As a reminder, Ukrzaliznytsia opened a modern waiting room for people with disabilities at the Kharkiv railway station.

In addition, it was reported that elevators for people with disabilities will be installed at Kyiv's railway station.
