Canada, Denmark, and France greenlight Kyiv to utilize their weapons against Russian territory
Canada, Denmark, and France supported Ukraine's call to allow the use of Western weapons transferred to Kyiv to strike military targets on Russian territory.
Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly announced this while visiting Sweden on May 29. Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also made statements on the matter.
Canada
The Canadian diplomat noted that her country has never set any restrictions on the territory where the transferred weapons can be used.
Also, Joly emphasized that, at the moment, there are no red lines in Russia that could prevent the use of the transferred weapons for the legal defense of Ukraine's territory.
"And in Canada, there are no conditions for the use of weapons transferred to Ukraine, and therefore, we will continue to work with the Ukrainian armed forces," the minister noted.
France
The President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, also supported the strikes on Russian territory. He stated this during a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his trip to Germany.
"We believe that we should allow them to neutralize the military facilities from which Ukraine is being attacked, but we cannot allow it to affect other civilian facilities or other military targets," the French leader noted.
According to Macron, preventing Ukrainian strikes on Russian targets from which Ukraine is shelling would mean saying to Ukrainians: "We give you weapons, but you cannot defend yourself."
"When Russia has determined the locations from which to attack Ukraine, I think we can allow it if we want to achieve our goal," the French president emphasized.
He also believes that the possibility of allowing Ukraine to do this does not mean an escalation of the conflict.
"Actually, we are not provoking escalation," said the head of the French state.
He justified his position because, in this way, Ukraine could better protect its territory.
Denmark
Denmark, which supplies Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets, is also not against strikes on facilities in Russia. The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, confirmed this, stating that Ukrainians can use Danish weapons outside their territory.
This month, the Danish government announced a new military aid package that included air defense systems and funding for the transfer of F-16 fighter jets. A certain amount of funds from this package will be directed to preparing Danish F-16 AM/AB fighters for dispatch to Ukraine.
"Ukraine can use what we donated, including outside its borders, that is, for purposes in Russia, if it is in accordance with international law," the Danish government official said.
Also, before the working meeting on Ukraine's defense in Prague, Mette Frederiksen noted that Ukraine's partners should make more efforts to strengthen the Ukrainian air defense system.
"I welcome Germany's decision to provide the Patriot system. More countries should do the same… Europe should supply Ukraine with more systems and missiles," Frederiksen said.
For reference:
It should be noted that after the start of a new offensive by Russian troops in the Kharkiv region, some European countries started a campaign to ease restrictions on the use of weapons transferred to Ukraine.
In turn, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also emphasized that Ukraine's use of Western weapons against Russian targets would not make NATO part of the conflict. The head of the Alliance has redoubled efforts to urge allies to lift restrictions on hitting targets in Russia.
The US Helsinki Commission also stated that the United States of America should allow Ukraine to strike with American weapons against the forces of the Russian Armed Forces in the border areas of Russia. However, the Pentagon said that American weapons are intended for use on the territory of Ukraine.
On May 28, the Prime Minister of Belgium explained during a press conference that the 30 F-16 fighter jets that Belgium has pledged to hand over to Ukraine can only be used on Ukrainian territory. The same applies to other weapons provided for in the security agreement.
