Rebuilding Ukraine: Ukrainian energy system to receive over $56 mln funding from Sweden
The Swedish government has provided Ukraine with a new energy package totaling SEK 650 million (over EUR 56 million).
The Swedish government's press service reports this.
The government said that the new support will help ensure Ukraine's energy supply so that essential public services such as schools, hospitals, transport, water supply, and businesses can continue to function.
The new Swedish support for energy infrastructure is financed from the aid budget and managed by Sida on behalf of the government.
The new support consists of two parts:
- SEK 500 million through the Fund for Energy Support of Ukraine of the Energy Community;
- SEK 150 million through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The Swedish government notes that support through the UNDP will be aimed at financing the urgent construction of energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
"There is a great need for technical equipment and other resources for energy production, such as generators, transformers, installations, and personnel training.
Due to urgent needs, priority will be given to Kharkiv, but other regions of Ukraine will also be able to benefit from support, such as Odesa, Kyiv and Mykolaiv," the Swedish government emphasized.
It should be noted that the Swedish government agreed to create a three-year framework program of military support for Ukraine from 2024 to 2026, with a total amount of SEK 75 billion (over EUR 6 billion).
For reference:
- Since their full-scale invasion began, Russian forces have been attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure. However, in the spring of 2024, they deliberately focused on decommissioning large power plants. This resulted in the destruction of the Burshtyn and Ladyzhyn power plants on March 22.
- In addition, on March 29, during another shelling, three thermal power plants in Ukraine were attacked at once. In particular, the energy sector was affected.
- Two weeks later, on April 11, during a massive attack on Ukraine, the Kyiv region, which supplied electricity to three regions – Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions was utterly destroyed.
- On the night of April 27, Russian troops attacked the country's energy facilities in the Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, resulting in fires and casualties.
- On the night of May 8, Russian aggressors attacked three DTEK thermal power plants during a massive strike with missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, seriously damaging the equipment. This is the fifth enormous shelling of the company's energy facilities in the past month and a half.
