Stoltenberg recommends reorganizing Ukraine’s aid structure: “In the long term, we need more predictable, stronger support for Ukraine”

NATO is considering establishing a long-term plan for managing the distribution of weapons and funding to Ukraine. The initial plans may be set in motion at the Alliance summit in Washington.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reports this at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly session.

"I strongly believe that we need a firmer, stronger institutional structure for the support. Short-term voluntary announcements are good, but in the long term, we need more predictable, stronger support for Ukraine," he said.

According to him, he has already proposed several initiatives that the allies will be able to approve in July at the summit.

"This is NATO's big role in the supply of weapons and training of soldiers, as well as the long-term financial commitments [to help Ukraine – ed.]," Stoltenberg stated.

The NATO summit in Washington will be held from July 9 to 11 in the US capital and will be dedicated to the Alliance's 75th anniversary. It was officially proposed in 2023 during the NATO summit in Vilnius.

It is essential for Ukraine because, as the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski, previously noted, the West must convince President Vladimir Putin that it is ready for a long-term conflict with Russia and long-term support for Ukraine.

At the end of April, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is already preparing for the upcoming NATO summit, which is scheduled for July and will be held in the United States. Kyiv is eager to receive an invitation to join the Alliance. Additionally, Zelensky hinted that a decision may be made at the summit in Washington to transfer seven Patriot systems to Ukraine.

Regarding Ukraine's accession to NATO, as Stoltenberg previously noted, the allies are unlikely to reach a consensus at the summit in Washington in July on the country's invitation to the Alliance.
