Rebuilding Ukraine: government approves over $38 mln for critical TPP reconstruction

During the meeting on May 17, Ukraine's government allocated over UAH 1.5 billion [over $38 mln – ed.] for the reconstruction of the Zmiiv TPP in the Kharkiv region and the Trypillia TPP in the Kyiv region.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this.

"We expect maximum efficiency in the use of these funds. The work must be done as quickly as possible," the PM emphasized.

In particular, 726 million hryvnias were allocated from the state budget reserve fund for the state company Centrenergo. Another UAH 826 million is from the fund for liquidating the consequences of aggression.

Russian forces have been attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure since the beginning of their full-scale invasion. However, in the spring of 2024, they specifically targeted decommissioning large power plants. As a result, on March 22, the Burshtyn and Ladyzhyn power plants were struck and damaged.

In addition, on March 29, during another shelling, three thermal power plants in Ukraine were attacked at once. In particular, the energy sector was affected.

Two weeks later, on April 11, during a massive attack on Ukraine, the Trypillia TPP in Kyiv region, which supplied electricity to three regions – Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions, was completely destroyed.

On the night of April 27, Russian troops attacked the country's energy facilities in the Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, resulting in fires and casualties.

On the night of May 8, Russian aggressors attacked three DTEK thermal power plants during a massive strike with missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, seriously damaging the equipment. This is the fifth massive shelling of the company's energy facilities in the past month and a half.

"Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, DTEK thermal power plants have been fired upon about 180 times. During this period, 51 workers were injured and three energy workers were killed by shelling at the stations," the company noted.
