Ukraine's boxer Lomachenko wins back IBF lightweight title

Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko became the owner of the IBF lightweight belt, regaining the title in a fight with George Kambosos.

On May 12, Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko defeated Australian George Kambosos in a fight for the vacant IBF lightweight world champion belt.

The match took place in Perth, Australia. The Ukrainian knocked out the Australian in the 11th round.

Throughout the fight, Lomachenko had the initiative and delivered many strong and accurate blows to the opponent, which led to numerous hematomas and dissections on Kabosos's face.

The fight between Lomachenko and Kambosos

  • The first two rounds went in favor of Lomachenko. The Ukrainian boxer threw more punches and even punched Kambosos's block several times. Instead, the Australian responded mainly with blows to the Ukrainian's body.
  • In the next two rounds, Kambosos began to open up more often. However, Lomachenko did not continue to lose momentum and delivered several successful combinations of blows.
  • In the fifth round, Lomachenko delivered a strong blow to the head of Kambosos, and the Australian almost went for a knockdown but stayed on his feet and continued the fight without the referee counting. In the next one, the Australian tried to respond, but the Ukrainian boxer was more active at the end of the round.
  • In the eighth round, Kambosos suffered a dissection of his eyebrow after a punch from Lomachenko, who continued to inflict more blows on the Australian.
  • In the 11th round, Lomachenko won an early victory over Kambosos: first, he sent him to a knockdown, and then another, after which the fight was over.

The prize money distribution will be 60% to 40% in favor of the Australian boxer. He should receive a guaranteed five million dollars.

In turn, Lomachenko will receive $3.5 million before taxes. Boxers also count on income from advertising and the sale of television rights.

This was Lomachenko's first fight since May 2023, when he lost to the American Devin Gainey by unanimous decision in the fight for the title of the absolute champion of the world in lightweight. Now, the 36-year-old Ukrainian has 18 wins (12 by knockout) and three defeats in the professional ring.

It was Kambosos' third defeat in his career. The 30-year-old Australian also has 21 wins (10 by knockout).
