Ukraine and US continue security agreement talks in third round of negotiations

The head of the Office of the President, Andrii Yermak, held the third round of negotiations with the United States regarding the preparation for concluding a bilateral security agreement.

The Office of the President's press service reported this.

The negotiations were carried out following the instructions of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Ukrainian delegation, led by the head of the President's Office, consisted of representatives from the negotiating group officially appointed by the head of state on January 8 of this year, with the necessary adjustments made.

"The recent US approval of a $61 billion aid package to Ukraine has significantly accelerated the negotiation process, and I am convinced that our leaders will be able to sign a bilateral security agreement shortly," Yermak said.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed the draft agreement's text in great detail. They acknowledged significant progress in aligning the main provisions of the document and revised the process for future actions.

"The agreement will not only once again confirm the leadership of the United States in the military and security support of Ukraine, but it will also directly contribute to the approaching victory over the Russian aggressor and lay a solid foundation for long-term cooperation between Ukraine and the United States in strengthening our country's defense capabilities," the head of the Office of the President emphasized.

On July 12, 2023, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius, the leaders of the G7 countries agreed on a Joint Declaration of support for Ukraine. The document discussed, in particular, the work on specific bilateral long-term obligations and agreements in the security field.

In January, President Volodymyr Zelensky approved the delegation's composition to negotiate security guarantees for Ukraine. In accordance with the president's decree, the delegation was led by Andrii Yermak, the head of the Office of the President.

As of today, Ukraine has already signed bilateral security agreements with nine states, namely:

• Germany,
• France,
• Denmark,
• Canada,
• Italy,
• the Netherlands,
• Finland,
• Latvia.
