United to win: Iceland parliament passes long-term policy to support Ukraine

Iceland's parliament officially approved a resolution providing aid to Ukraine from 2024 to 2028, reaffirming Kyiv's enduring and unwavering support.

This was reported in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, according to EP.

"Resolute support for Ukraine is the most important security issue facing Iceland and Europe. The international legal system, on which our security and standard of living are based, is under threat due to the brutal invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation," said Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir.

As the head of the Icelandic agency emphasized, that is why Reykjavik should make its contribution to the defense of Ukraine "decisively and concretely."

"With this proposal and the corresponding commitment in the budget plan, a solid foundation is laid for our purposeful support to Ukraine," the head of the MFA stressed.

It is reported that Kyiv's long-term policy is aimed at supporting:

• independence,
• sovereignty,
• borders,
• security of the civilian population,
• humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Ukraine.

According to the publication, Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir presented the relevant program to the government on October 10 last year. At the same time, the Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, presented it to the Parliament for consideration on March 12, 2024.

Iceland has announced that it will financially support the Czech Republic's initiative to purchase ammunition for Ukraine and equipment for female Ukrainian army service members. The island country will allocate about two million euros for this.

In addition, Iceland has decided to join two coalitions, the Mine Action Coalition and the IT Coalition, which provide support to Ukraine.

Also, Iceland and Estonia prepared another package of military aid for Ukraine. The package included medical equipment, particularly a mobile hospital, demining equipment, and anti-drone equipment.

Even in winter, Iceland provided the Ukrainian military with warm clothes, including socks, underpants, merino wool sweaters, hats, winter mittens, shoes, and outerwear. At that time, Iceland even organized a nationwide marathon of knitting socks and sweaters for Ukraine's armed forces.
