Russia arrests Reuters and AP journalists

Journalists Sergei Karelin and Konstantin Gabov, who cooperated with the Associated Press and Reuters, were arrested in Russia. They were accused of working for the company of the deceased opposition politician Aleksei Navalny.

As the newspaper reported, video journalist Karelin, who cooperated with the Associated Press and Deutsche Welle, was arrested in Russia's Murmansk region on Sunday.

He is accused of working with the Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF). It is not yet known what article the journalist is accused of and what city of the region he is in.

In addition, on April 27, a court in Moscow sent Gabov, whom the court's press service and TASS, Russia's leading news service, call a Reuters producer, to a pretrial detention center.

Gabov is accused of participating in an "extremist cooperation" — for creating photo and video materials for the YouTube channel Navalny Live.

ACF has not yet made a statement about the detention of Gabov and Karelin.

We will remind that the arrests of Russian journalists on charges of cooperation with the ACF began in the spring of 2024. On March 27, Rusnews journalist Olha Komleva from Ufa was sent to the pretrial detention center. Before ACF was declared an "extremist organization," she was a volunteer at Navalny's local headquarters.

Antonina Favorska, journalist and photographer of Sotavision media, who filmed the last video with Navalny, was also arrested in Moscow in March.

The death of opposition politician Navalny

On February 16, the Russian colony announced the death of prisoner Alexei Navalny. They claim that Navalny felt ill after the walk and fainted almost immediately. The doctors allegedly took all the necessary resuscitation measures, but it did not give positive results, so they declared him dead.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Navalny "was obviously killed by Putin." NATO said it was necessary to establish all the facts regarding Navalny's death, and the European Commission called the politician's death "a grim reminder of what Putin and his regime are."

Subsequently, the head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense, Kyrylo Budanov, told reporters that Russian politician Alexei Navalny died of natural causes — due to a blood clot.

"I may disappoint you, but what we know is that he actually died from a blood clot. And this is more or less confirmed. This is not taken from the Internet, but, unfortunately, a natural [death]," Budanov said.
