Solutions from Ukraine: Lviv library establishes center for non-formal adult education

The Coordinating Center for Informal Adult Education will officially open at the Lviv Media Library this Friday, April 19.

What is the problem?

Since 2019, the Network of Education Centers has been active in Lviv, collaborating with the City Institute and the Lviv Department of Culture to implement the idea of lifelong learning through the city's libraries.

As of today, the network includes nine libraries where various adult courses are held. For five years, more than 200 free training courses were held for more than 13,000 residents of Lviv.

What is the solution?

The Coordination Center for Informal Education of Adults is opening in the Central Municipal Library (Muliarska St., 2A) to expand activities and create even more educational opportunities for adults.

The creation of the center is an important step in supporting the city of Lviv's membership in the network of UNESCO learning cities, which it joined this year.

How does it work?

The library has undergone a complete reconstruction and now features:

• A spacious lecture hall with an amphitheater;
• A comfortable co-working area with designated zones for both group and individual work;
• An exclusive hall for workshops;
• An inviting reception area with a curated selection of books;
• A dressing room;
• A fully-equipped kitchen;
• and a coordination center for adult non-formal education under the Network of Education Centers.

Moving forward, the ground floor of the Central Municipal Library boasts an open layout featuring well-stocked shelves and a convenient co-working area. It serves as a hub for residents to engage in self-improvement and learning.

The library continues its usual functions by issuing books and serving readers. Additionally, it will now offer the following services:

– Registration for educational courses or workshops;

– Training in project management;

– The opportunity to develop your course.

The repair and arrangement were funded by DVV International (Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany), the United Nations Development Program, and Polish aid (through the Jagiellonian Foundation and the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland).

It should be noted that the Ukrainian Book Institute launched the interactive map of Ukraine's book ecosystem.

The German Goethe-Institut announced the launch of a project for libraries.

Furthermore, a roundtable was hosted at the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy to present the progress made in establishing the National Electronic Library of Ukraine.
