Putin will end war only when he understands he can’t win on battlefield — Scholz

Germany will not stop its efforts to support Ukraine in the war against Russian aggressors and calls on the West to continue such support.

Reuters reports that Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, promised this during his speech at the meeting of the European Social Democrats in Bucharest the day before.

"The war in Ukraine will end when (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin decides to withdraw his troops.

However, he will make this decision only when he realizes that he cannot win the war on the battlefield," said the head of the German government.

Scholz also reminded that his country has allocated €28 billion of military support to Kyiv so far.

The chancellor noted that the West's support for Ukraine is "the key to restoring peace" in Europe.

"We will support it as long as it is necessary," the head of the German government emphasized.

Scholz said the best way to prevent any escalation, including a potential conflict between Russia and NATO, is through what he called "effective deterrence."

"That's why we invest more in our own security and defense together as Europeans so that no one dares to attack us," the chancellor called for "building a strong and truly European defense industry."

It will be recalled that on March 15, at a press conference after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced increased support for Ukraine.

However, Scholz renewed his statement that he does not support the transfer of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

German MPs also did not support the opposition's proposal to demand that the government transfer Taurus strategic missiles to Ukraine.
