The Japanese government approved a decision to extend the resolution to revoke Russia's most favored nation trade status as part of economic sanctions over its invasion, Kyodo reports.

The parliament greenlighted its decision to deprive Russia of trade benefits and preferences, such as lower tariffs, in April 2022, done as part of punishment for the invasion of Ukraine.

The anti-Russian restrictions imposed by Tokyo are valid for one year, after which the government extends them for the next year. This decision is the second extension of the sanctions period.

Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said at a press conference on Friday that Japan, in cooperation with the international community, will continue and increase pressure on Russia for the war it launched against Ukraine in February 2022.

By the end of March 2025, all Russian imports to Japan will be subject to increased duties. This includes a 5 percent tax on salmon supplies (up from the previous rate of 3.5 percent) and a 6 percent duty on crab imports (the pre-war rate was 4 percent).
