Russian forces have carried out over 1,000 chemical attacks on Ukrainian positions in two-year war
Since the beginning of the large-scale war, Russian forces have carried out 1068 chemical attacks in Ukraine, including 250 in February 2024.
The AFU Support Forces recorded tear gas munitions use with poisonous chemicals prohibited for warfare (hostilities) by paragraph 5 of Article 1 of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
In February 2024 alone, AFU detected 244 cases of the use of water cannon, one case of gas use, and
five cases of other chemical munitions.
Documented cases of the use of hazardous chemicals are submitted to the investigative authorities for investigation.
Russian forces have also started using chemical weapons more frequently, including a new type of grenade with poisonous substances.
"In December, the use of the RG-VO grenade was recorded for the first time. This grenade contains chloroacetophenone, an asphyxiating substance prohibited by the Geneva Protocol on the use of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or Other Gases in Warfare," military spokesman Andrii Rudyk said.
Russia is now trying to study the reaction of the international community to expand the range of chemical weapons use in the future.
A Ukrainian intelligence officer said on condition of anonymity that the Russians are using a type of CS – tear gas, which is used during mass riots and can temporarily disable a person due to irritation of the eyes, nose, lungs and skin.
