30 Ukrainian veterans and soldiers set to compete in prestigious sports events in Las Vegas

Veterans and service members who have suffered serious injuries will compete for the first time at the prestigious United States Air Force Trials 2024.

The competition is taking place in Las Vegas from March 4 to March 16, Rubryka reports, citing the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine.

What's the problem?

The competition's main goal is to engage veterans and military personnel in sports activities and promote rehabilitation through sports events among veterans.

"The trials of war, injuries, and the difficult path of rehabilitation require extraordinary strength of spirit and will. 'Veteran sports — the language of resilience!' — these are not just words. This is our reality," said Acting Minister of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine Oleksandr Porkhun, bidding farewell to the national team heading to the competition in the US. "Through sports, we show that we can achieve results despite all obstacles. We demonstrate our resilience and leadership to the world. From my own experience, I can say that injury is not the end of life, as it may seem at the beginning. It is another trial that can and should be overcome."

Porkhun noted that the participation of Ukrainian veterans in international competitions, such as the United States Air Force Trials, is important not only as a sports event but also as a powerful veteran diplomacy and an indicator of national resilience.

"Salute to you for what you have already done, for what you continue to do. Your fight continues. Today, you have a new mission: besides reminding the world of our resilience and strength through your example, your own example will help your brothers-in-arms adapt to normal life after returning home. This is the noblest mission — to help those who are nearby," said Acting Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvii Bidnyi to the team members.

What's the solution?

Ukraine will be represented at the United States Air Force Trials 2024 by 30 athletes who were selected during the National Adaptive Sports Competitions in December.

For participants, these competitions are not just physical activity but also a demonstration of achievements and struggle and an opportunity to thank partners for their ongoing support.

Captain of the team, Yurii Haponchuk, shared that sports have always been a part of his life, even after he suffered a mine explosion injury and lost his foot.

"Recovery after the injury was difficult, but thanks to workouts in the gym and sitting volleyball, I realized that my life activity should not be limited. These types of sports gave me a new purpose and confidence that I can continue to live fully despite physical limitations," he said.

Participant of the team Tymur Leon stressed:

"These international competitions are an opportunity to show how resilient the Ukrainian nation is. When I decided to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine, my life changed forever. Choosing the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade was not just a military duty, but a place where my skills and knowledge found their application. Commanding a unit became my new reality: every day is a test and an opportunity to become stronger."

According to the head coach of the National Team of Ukraine, Olena Yanovska, each team participant embodies honor and respect, courage, indomitable spirit, and a thirst for victory, which are sources of inspiration for all of us.

"Every day, you demonstrate that there are no limits to achieving goals when there is self-confidence and strength of spirit," she added.

How does it work?

The national team will compete in nine adaptive sports:

  • Archery,
  • Athletics,
  • Cycling,
  • Powerlifting,
  • Indoor rowing,
  • Sitting volleyball,
  • Swimming,
  • Wheelchair basketball,
  • Wheelchair rugby.

"Reintegration of veterans and service members after injuries through physical activity is crucial, as it not only contributes to physical strength restoration but also serves as a powerful tool for psychological rehabilitation. Engaging in sports and physical exercises helps overcome post-traumatic stress disorder, improves mood, and promotes socialization. The Ukrainian Veterans Fund recognizes this need and actively supports relevant initiatives," said Ruslana Velychko-Tryfoniuk, Acting Executive Director of the Ukrainian Veterans Fund.

Indeed, the Ukrainian Veterans Fund has funded eight projects to engage veterans in physical activity through competitive programs. In the current year, five competitions are planned, two of which will focus on supporting community associations.

The competition in Ukraine is organized by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine together with the Ukrainian Veterans Fund, the "Come Back Alive" public organization, the "Stratcom Ukraine" charity organization, and the "Invictus Games Ukraine" public organization.
