Denmark signs 10-year security agreement with Ukraine

Denmark has signed a 10-year agreement on security assistance for Ukraine, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference, barrons.com reports.

The agreement stipulates that Denmark is committed to supporting Ukraine in both the military and civilian spheres over the next ten years.

"This is the most serious security situation since the end of the Cold War. And the Danish government cannot but emphasize how important it is for Ukraine to get the military capabilities it needs. If we do not stand together, Ukraine will not stand, and then potentially Europe will not stand either." 

The agreement will help support Ukraine's ability to defend itself against Russia and deter future Russian attacks.

Ukraine commits to implementing necessary reforms aimed at developing democracy and fighting corruption to pave the way for future membership in the EU and NATO.

"With these commitments, we are sending a very clear and unambiguous signal to the international community that we fully support Ukraine, including in the long term."

The aid will be financed from the Danish fund to support Ukraine, which is currently estimated at 69.1 billion kroner.

According to the latest data from the German Institute for the World Economy, Denmark is Ukraine's fourth largest donor of military aid.

Denmark's security commitments also include training for Ukrainian military personnel.

"It also heralds much closer cooperation between Denmark and Ukraine, which includes, among other things, cooperation in cybersecurity and intelligence," Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said in a statement.

On February 22, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth almost $250 million.

Earlier, the G7 countries agreed to provide Ukraine with bilateral security guarantees at the NATO summit in Vilnius, as over 20 countries joined this initiative.
