United to win: allies join forces to equip Ukraine with AI-enhanced drone arsenal

The UK is working with allies, including the US, to provide Ukraine with thousands of new AI-enabled drones.

Bloomberg reports this with reference to sources familiar with the matter.

What is the problem?

Drones are becoming increasingly important in the Russian-Ukrainian war as the Russian full-scale invasion nears its two-year mark, and a global race is underway to develop new technologies that could define the war's future.

"Russia is ramping up its own domestic production of combat drones to support the invasion and has received significant supplies from its ally Iran," Bloomberg notes.

What is the solution?

The focus on UAVs comes as Ukraine faces an artillery shortage that could become critical over the next three months, forcing the military to decide to focus on a narrower war front.

"While new drone capabilities won't replace the urgent need for munitions, they could help alleviate some of that shortage and create a new dynamic on the battlefield, the people said," Bloomberg writes.

How does it work?

As one of the interlocutors of the publication explained, drones with artificial intelligence will be deployed in large flotillas that will communicate with each other to target enemy positions without the need to control each of them by a human operator.

Western military planners who are developing the technology believe that it will allow Ukraine to suppress certain enemy positions thanks to the aforementioned UAVs. They noted that drones could be delivered to Kyiv within the next few months. However, the deadlines may still be violated.

For reference:

It is worth noting, as Rubryka previously reported, that the Drone Coalition was officially launched as part of the work of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, according to the Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov. He signed the corresponding letter of intent and expressed his gratitude to the co-leaders of the coalition – Latvia and Great Britain – for this important initiative.

Great Britain and Latvia will transfer thousands of drones to Ukraine as co-leaders of a large international coalition.
