Ukrainian intelligence confirms use of Starlink terminals by Russian troops

Ukrainian intelligence said Russian forces were using terminals of Elon Musk's satellite internet service Starlink in the captured regions.

Radio intercepts of Russian communications indicate that Starlink terminals have been installed in the units of the 83rd Separate Mechanized Brigade operating in the Donetsk region near Klishchiivka and Andriivka.

The scale of Russian use of Starlink terminals in the war is growing and "is beginning to become systemic."

According to one of the Defense One anonymous sources, Ukrainian troops first recorded Russia's use of satellite communications on the front line several months ago.

Enemy forces receive Starlink terminals through "parallel imports" or volunteer resellers. Purchases are made through third countries, using front companies.

SpaceX, which produces Starlink terminals, notes that the company does not do business with Russia or its military, yet the company stated that it would deactivate terminals that were obtained without an appropriate license.

At the beginning of the full-scale war, Elon Musk's company provided Ukraine with Starlink terminals to ensure communication at the front. Ukraine has received 42,000 terminals provided by SpaceX and partners.

In the fall, the company had asked the Pentagon to continue funding the operation of Starlink satellite communications systems in Ukraine, which are crucial for the communication of the Ukrainian military in the combat zone.

The Pentagon then confirmed that they were discussing Starlink funding in Ukraine after Musk's appeal.
