Romanian border guards find the body of drowned Ukrainian illegally crossing Tisza River

Ukrainian border guards received information from Romania about the body of a civilian in the Prut River near the Mamalyga border crossing point.

The deceased was from the eastern Kharkiv region born in 1982. Romanian law enforcement officers are currently establishing the causes and circumstances of the citizen's death.

According to the State Border Guard Service, the man tried to illegally enter Romania by crossing the Tisza River, a popular route among men attempting to avoid mobilization and move abroad.

As of 2023, 15 men had drowned in the Tisza River, which divides the Ukrainian-Romanian and Ukrainian-Hungarian borders. Three more died in the mountains.

The water level in the Tisza River has drastically risen. Border guards say that this river was the site of the largest number of deaths related to attempts to cross the border illegally.

Rescuers also warn that due to precipitation in the form of sleet and rain, there is a significant avalanche hazard.

The number of attempts to organize the transfer of men abroad in violation of the law has decreased compared to last year.

Law enforcement officers initiated more than 1,600 criminal proceedings based on reports from the State Border Guard Service. Border units exposed more than 220 groups that illegally trafficked men abroad.

Most offenders are detained outside the checkpoints. At the same time, those wishing to leave illegally imitate legal grounds for doing so at the checkpoints. Every day, about 100 people who do not fall into the category of a permit and do not comply with the conditions of crossing are denied entry.
