Portuguese foreign and education ministers visit Kyiv to discuss Ukraine’s reconstruction

On Monday, February 5, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, João Cravinho, and the Minister of Education, João Costa, arrived in Ukraine for a visit.

Cravinho announced this on the X social network.

"It is a great pleasure to return to Kyiv with my colleague, Minister of Education João Kosta, to confirm our support for the reconstruction of Ukraine," wrote the Portuguese Foreign Minister.

According to the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, the ministers arrived on a two-day visit, during which they planned to discuss the war and the restoration of Ukraine.

It should be noted that the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, visited Ukraine in August 2023.

Despite being a relatively small, Portugal has made significant commitments to support Ukraine through financial, humanitarian, and even military aid.

According to the Kiel Institute for the World Econome's data, Portugal's total commitments to Ukraine amount to 0.339 billion euros, ranking 25th out of all donor countries.

This commitment constitutes 0.141% of Portugal's GDP, placing it at 23rd on the list.

In addition to these overall commitments, Portugal has also made a substantial financial commitment of 0.250 billion euros, ranking 14th among donor countries.

Portugal fully supports the EU's restrictive measures against the terrorist state of Russia. Specifically, the Portuguese authorities have frozen approximately €18 million in assets belonging to sanctioned individuals in accordance with EU sanctions against Russia.

In addition to its own national efforts, Portugal is actively providing military assistance and training to Ukraine through the European Union and NATO. This includes training for fighter pilots.

In total, Portugal has donated 45 M113 vehicles to Ukraine. It was revealed that Ukraine had acquired Portuguese Tekever AR3 UAVs and three Leopard 2A6 tanks as part of international military support.

Furthermore, Portugal has also donated eight high-capacity power generators and two tonnes of medical equipment to Ukraine.
