Ukraine and Canada continue talks on security guarantees agreement
Today, January 29, Ukraine and Canada held another round of negotiations to conclude a bilateral agreement on bilateral security obligations between the states.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported that.
"In fulfillment of the instructions of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the head of the Ukrainian delegation at the negotiations on the development and preparation of international agreements between Ukraine and other states on security guarantees – the head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak, another round of negotiations was held with Canada on January 26 regarding the conclusion of a bilateral agreement on bilateral security obligations between Ukraine and Canada," the message reads.
It is noted that the negotiations took place to develop the provisions of the joint declaration on support for Ukraine, adopted by the leaders of the member countries of the "Group of Seven" (G7) on July 12, 2023, in Vilnius on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Mykola Tochytskyi, at the beginning of the negotiations, expressed his sincere and deep gratitude to the Canadian government and the Canadian people for the invaluable help and extended support provided to Ukraine to repel the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation.
The head of the Canadian delegation, the political director of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the country's steadfastness and readiness to stand side by side with Ukraine to overcome Russian aggression.
Special attention is focused on Canada's participation in the negotiation process, which symbolizes the Euro-Atlantic nature of the future security obligations given to Ukraine by the partner states.
"Participants in the negotiations continued the direct processing of individual provisions of the project of the future document, discussed its individual blocks, and exchanged opinions on the planning and modalities of the further negotiation process," added the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
For reference:
It should be noted that at the beginning of July last year, the G7 countries approved a declaration promising to provide security guarantees to Ukraine. More than 30 countries have already joined it.
Also, several states have started negotiations with Ukraine on security guarantees on a bilateral basis. In particular, negotiations with Germany began on November 17, 2023.
On January 14, President Zelensky announced that Ukraine is currently discussing security guarantees with Romania. They are using the agreement with Britain as a framework for these discussions.
In addition, a few days ago, the US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, said that the United States had started discussions with the Office of the President of Ukraine and the government regarding bilateral security obligations. Two meetings have been held, and new ones are expected.
