The Latvian government has allocated €15.6 million to cover the costs incurred by municipal authorities with the reception and support of Ukrainian refugees, LSM.lv reports.

What is the problem?

According to Delfi, citing information from the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war, 28,920 Ukrainian refugees have been registered in Latvia.
At the same time, 23,066 refugees were granted a residence permit with the right to work in Latvia.
As of December 20243, more than 50,000 Ukrainians, including about 20,000 children, have found refuge in Latvia.

What is the solution?

The funds were provided for the period until the summer of 2024.

The government order provides for the coverage of expenses regarding education, housing, etc.

The Latvian government, in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Finance, has already transferred €28.5 million to local governments for January-November 2023.

Recently, Latvia has started preparing a new aid package for Ukraine, including howitzers, ammunition, and more.

Ukraine and Latvia are also creating a coalition of drones and electronic warfare systems, which will be joined by other allied countries.

Since February 2023, Latvia has allowed the confiscation of cars from drunk drivers and their transfer to Ukraine.

The Baltic country recently handed over another batch of cars confiscated from drunk drivers.

Lithuania also provides humanitarian aid to the affected regions of Ukraine. In Chernihiv region, schools and kindergartens received 32 diesel generators of various capacities from Latvia.
