Russian attacks have damaged every seventh school in Ukraine – education ministry
Ukraine's education ministry has reported that Russian forces have destroyed more than 200 schools and damaged another 1,600, meaning that every seventh school has suffered from the attacks.
Deputy Minister Andrii Stashkiv says 900,000 Ukrainian students are currently studying online.
"They cannot attend schools and are studying using remote technologies. And in a time of war, this is really a challenge for both teachers and students."
To ensure children still receive education, Kharkiv is building Ukraine's first underground school, which is scheduled to open in the spring. Authorities plan to open another such school in one of the city's central districts, the mayor says.
Abo"school underground" is to be built in the frontline Pokrovsk. An international NGO has agreed to develop a project to reconstruct one of the educational institutions with a shelter that would allow for training.
The organization has already made a general visual solution for the "school underground". This project should be discussed with the community so the designers can begin their work, which will last several months. When the project is ready, the city authorities will look for funding sources, including the state.
