Germany may send Taurus missiles to Ukraine within a month – Munich security council chief
Germany may approve the transfer of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine no later than in a month, says the Munich Security Conference chief Christoph Heusgen, in an exclusive interview with Radio Liberty.
He suggested that the situation with the supply of long-range missiles could be similar to the Leopard 2 tanks issue.
"You may remember that when there was a debate about Leopard tanks, we were also reluctant at first, but eventually changed our minds and provided Ukraine with these important tanks."
Heusgen also said he would consider the Taurus missiles "an important addition to the arsenal of the Ukrainian forces.
Bundestag may consider the issue of providing Ukraine with Taurus missiles as early as January 17. The opposition bloc plans to submit a proposal. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz previously turned down this decision.
Germany ordered 600 Taurus missiles for its air force in the early 2000s. However, according to German media, the Bundeswehr currently has only 150 operational missiles.
According to the military outlet Militarny, the Taurus cruise missiles will unravel strikes on Russian military infrastructure in the occupied territory at long distances.
On May 27, Ukraine made an official request to Germany uplifting the Taurus issue. Bundeswehr politicians are gradually changing their minds about the transfer.
