Russia has damaged 872 Ukrainian cultural heritage monuments since start of invasion

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine continues to document damage to cultural heritage sites in Ukraine due to Russian aggression. 

Rubryka reports, citing the ministry, that from February 24, 2022, to December 25, 2023, 872 cultural heritage sites have been destroyed or damaged. Among them are 120 nationally significant landmarks, 682 locally significant ones, and 70 recently discovered objects.

Specifically, architecture monuments account for 279 objects, architecture and urban planning — 255, history — 203, architecture and history — 33, monumental art — 19, urban planning and monumental art — 17, archaeology — 18, architecture and urban planning, history — 38, urban planning — 5, science and technology — 2, garden and park art — 1, architecture and urban planning, monumental art — 1, architecture, monumental art — 1.

According to the data from regional administrations, since the start of the full-scale invasion, 23 landmarks have been completely destroyed, 672 partially damaged, and the extent of damage to 177 objects remains unknown.

Cultural heritage sites have been damaged or destroyed in 17 regions:

  • Kharkiv region – 216 damaged or destroyed cultural heritage sites, including ten nationally significant, 202 locally significant, and four recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Odesa region – 119, including 28 nationally significant and 91 locally significant.
  • Donetsk region – 111, including 12 nationally significant and 99 locally significant.
  • Kherson region – 86, including 12 nationally significant, 44 locally significant, and 30 recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Chernihiv region – 70, including 27 nationally significant, 37 locally significant, and six recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Kyiv region – 69, including 16 nationally significant, 37 locally significant, and 16 recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Zaporizhia region – 38 locally significant landmarks.
  • Lviv region – 33, including two nationally significant and 31 locally significant.
  • Dnipropetrovsk region – 32, including one nationally significant, 25 locally significant, and six recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Luhansk region – 30 locally significant landmarks.
  • Sumy region – 25, including five nationally significant and 20 locally significant.
  • Mykolaiv region – 22, including three nationally significant, 15 locally significant, and four recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Khmelnytskyi region – 10, including one nationally significant, five locally significant, and three recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Vinnytsia region – 4, including one nationally significant and three locally significant.
  • Poltava region – 4, including one nationally significant, two locally significant, and one recently discovered cultural heritage object.
  • Zhytomyr region – 2, including one nationally significant and one locally significant.
  • Kirovohrad region – One locally significant.
