Ukraine's allies could strengthen capacities by providing A-10 helicopters – Air Force spox
Ukraine's Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat says the units need to strengthen with attack aircraft, including helicopters.
Ihnat cited the interview with the commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, who stated that allies could strengthen Ukraine's aviation by providing A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft.
The A-10 will provide crucial support to ground forces as they try to seize the initiative at the front.
The attack aircraft will help destroy ground targets, such as tanks, artillery, and "everything that opposes the infantry."
US-made helicopters, such as AH-64 Apache, can also play an important role.
"Syrskyi emphasized that air support for the troops is really extremely important for the infantry, which is fighting very difficult battles every day. Today, this function is performed by Su-25, Mi-8 and Mi-24 of the army aviation.
Therefore, Ukraine needs to focus on ensuring that our partners provide us with various means, including air defense, artillery and aviation assets."
Ihnat added that the main goal for Ukraine remains F-16 fighters, which can gain air superiority. They will help both army aviation and attack aircraft to strike the enemy from the air and from the ground.
In May 2022, a training center was launched for Ukrainian pilots to fly American A-10 Thunderbolt II simulator, despite the US and Ukraine not approving the decision.
