Japan to send Ukraine a batch of energy equipment

Ukraine is set to receive seven high-voltage autotransformers and five gas turbines from Japan. 

The Ministry of Energy announced this following a meeting between Minister Herman Halushchenko and Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoko Kamikawa, Rubryka reports.

"Through close coordination with the Ministry of Energy, the Japanese government will transfer seven high-voltage autotransformers and five gas turbines to Ukraine. Specifically, the autotransformers were purchased with EBRD funds, and thanks to the efforts of Japan and the UNDP Ukraine Development Program, this large-scale energy equipment will be delivered to Ukraine. Ukraine will receive the gas turbines purchased by Japan through the intermediation and substantial support of the UNDP and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)," the statement said.

The equipment provided by Japan will enable uninterrupted power supply to over 6 million Ukrainians, particularly in areas affected by targeted Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Installing autotransformers and equipment that the Russian forces often destroyed enhances the energy system's resilience, and the gas turbines align with Ukraine's priorities in decentralizing the energy system.

"We plan to announce the provision of two additional autotransformers through UNDP for the effective and uninterrupted power grid operation in the near future," Kamikawa said during the meeting.

Halushchenko thanked the Japanese delegation for their support and readiness to continue assisting Ukraine. He also acknowledged Japan's participation in the work of groups implementing the Peace Formula, especially its first point — nuclear and radiation safety.

The Japanese government and UNDP have already provided 1,200 generators and 1,000 power units to state institutions and emergency services in Ukraine.

In early October 2023, the UNDP and Japan purchased and delivered two high-voltage autotransformers for the needs of the Ukrainian electricity operator "Ukrenergo."

On January 7, the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yoko Kamikawa, visited Ukraine, planning meetings in Kyiv, including with the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba.

During the visit, Kamikawa and Kuleba discussed the Peace Formula and preparations for the conference in Tokyo. She also announced that Japan plans to allocate $37 million in aid to Ukraine to purchase drone detection systems.

Also, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Yoko Kamikawa. During the meeting, they discussed various cooperation issues between the two countries.

The head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry will also hold consultations with partners from the Ukrainian side on the expansion of cooperation between the two countries.

Moreover, on January 7, Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yoko Kamikawa, visited Bucha and Irpin in the Kyiv region.

She also met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
