Domestic violence survivors shelter opens in Lviv region
A shelter for women who suffered from domestic violence was opened in the Hlynyanska community of the Lviv region: up to 22 people with children can live in seven furnished rooms.
Rubryka writes about this, referring to the press service of the Lviv Regional Military Administration.
What is the problem?
Violence against women is still one of the most common human rights violations in the world. About 1.1 million people suffer from violence in Ukraine every year, and 90% of them are women. It is also necessary to understand that these are only approximate data since many victims do not seek help or even perceive violence as a normal state of affairs.
As the law enforcement officers informed, more than 100 statements about domestic violence were sent to the National Police in the Lviv region in just five days of the new year. Considering that Ukraine has been living in the realities of war for almost two years, the problem of violence has become even more urgent.

What is the solution?
Therefore, in the Hlynyanska community, they started the work of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary shelter, where persons who have suffered from domestic violence or gender-based violence, as well as persons who have suffered from the illegal activity of human trafficking, can stay.
The administration reported that the American writer, philanthropist, TV presenter, and businesswoman Mitzi Perdue financed the reconstruction and arrangement of the shelter through the charity fund Scientia Ukraine.
How does it work?
"This is already the fourth such institution that has been opened in the Lviv region in the past two years. I am very grateful to the benefactors who made it possible. By the way, Perdue even sold her ring, which was given to her by her husband, to help women and children in Ukraine," noted Maksym Kozytskyi, the head of Lviv RMA.
The shelter was created on the basis of a reconstructed one-story building, which used to be a medical polyclinic.
The cost of the work is ₴8.6 million.
Girls and women who have suffered from domestic violence can apply to the reconstructed shelter.
"It is vital that women can seek help and know that they are not alone with their problem. A shelter is primarily a place of safety and comfort. We always emphasize that it is important not to keep silent about the problem but to seek help as soon as possible ", said Halyna Ganachivska, the head of the shelter.
At RMA, they noted that up to 22 people, including children, can temporarily live here in seven furnished rooms simultaneously.
In addition, there is a baby cot and a room equipped according to inclusive requirements.
A woman can stay in the shelter for up to three months. A specialist in social work will work with her, as well as a psychologist and a lawyer if necessary. The task is to get a person or family out of the crisis in which they found themselves.
"I would like as few people as possible in this shelter and society to be less aggressive and more respectful of each other; our task is to contribute to this in every possible way," the head of the region emphasized.
We will remind you that the extreme situation in which Ukrainians have to live provokes an increase in cases of violence in families. Both the state and non-governmental organizations take measures to help those who have experienced violence. And what solutions will be the most effective to prevent such cases?
