11% Kyiv citizens used metro as shelters during air raid alarms in 2023

During the night air raid alerts in 2023, more than 338,000 people used Kyiv subway stations, authorities report.

Most people used the subway as a shelter in May, when more than 92,000 people took refuge at the stations.

The Kyiv Metro says that underground metro stations have been operating as shelters around the clock since the first days of the full-scale war. The subway staff ensures the uninterrupted operation of the enterprise both as a transport and civil protection facility. All necessary maintenance work is being carried out, including civilian infrastructure.

Thanks to the support of Ukrainian partners, all the stations that serve as shelters are equipped with modular benches, folding chairs, mattresses, blankets, and a 4G internet connection.

The death toll from Russia's missile attack on Kyiv has risen to 29 on January 2 as Russian forces struck the capital with various targets.

January 1 was declared a day of mourning in Kyiv, Klitschko said.

Another victim of a massive missile attack by Russian forces on December 29 died in hospital in the Dnipro region.
