USAID delivers modular buildings to Ukraine to modernize border crossing
The USAID project has delivered six modular buildings to upgrade the border crossing point in the western Volyn region, Rubryka reports, citing the USAID "Economic Support for Ukraine.".
What's the problem?
Border crossing points with neighboring Poland and Slovakia are crucial export gateways for Ukraine and play a strategic role in the country's export logistics.
Timely and significant upgrades improve the overall functionality of the border crossing infrastructure.
"In collaboration with our international partners, the Restoration Agency is actively modernizing the border crossing points under our jurisdiction. Capital repairs, landscaping, and the restoration of border roads are essential for both increasing capacity and the comfort of people," says Mustafa Naiem, the head of the State Restoration and Infrastructure Development Agency of Ukraine.
What's the solution?
From December 18 to 22, the USAID "Economic Support for Ukraine" project delivered six modular buildings for installation at the border crossing point in the Volyn region.
Manufactured by the Dnipro-based company ARTMETAL UKRAINE, these modular buildings will serve as offices for employees of the State Customs and Border Guard Services of Ukraine.
How does it work?
Throughout December and early January 2024, the following activities will continue:
- Necessary ground preparation
- Dismantling of existing modular buildings
- Connection of telephone and internet networks
After installation, each modular building will have:
- Electricity supply
- Lighting system
- Telephone and Internet access
- Heating
- Air conditioning
- Office furniture
"According to the agreement with the USAID project, we are producing 32 modular structures and canopies of six different sizes and types, including sanitary facilities, canopies, and modules for customs and border guards' work. We are completing the first batch of such buildings for one of the border crossing points in the Volyn region. Our mission is to make fast construction accessible and improve conditions for those using these mobile buildings for convenient and comfortable work," says Oleh Miroshnychenko, the CEO of ARTMETAL UKRAINE.
The Volyn road border crossing point connecting Ukraine with Poland holds significant strategic export importance and is a priority for improving the country's logistical infrastructure. Upgrading border crossing points will contribute to the efficient export of grains to international markets. For Ukraine, one of the leading global grain exporters, this not only strengthens the country's economy but also plays a crucial role in preventing a global food crisis.
Background
From 2023 to 2026, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) allocates $115 million to support the State Restoration and Infrastructure Development Agency of Ukraine (SRIDA), Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ), and the State Customs Service of Ukraine for the modernization of border crossing points (BCPs) between Ukraine and Poland, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and Slovakia to increase trade volumes and grain exports.
The USAID project works on modernizing border crossing points to increase operational efficiency, improve cargo transportation logistics, boost trade volumes, and enhance grain exports and overall transportation flows.
For instance, on December 6, the USAID "Economic Support for Ukraine" project delivered and installed a 50 kW generator at the railway border crossing point in the Volyn region.
In early December, the project initiated the modernization of lighting systems at key border crossing points with Poland and Slovakia by replacing and installing 479 LED lights.
