The center was opened at the initiative of the National Police of Ukraine and with the support of Metinvest Group and Zaporizhstal.
What is the problem?
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, about 2,000 people have been reported missing in Zaporizhzhia region. To find these people, Ukraine's first "Center for the Search for Persons Disappeared under Special Circumstances" was opened.
"The most important thing is to bring all our people home. We are combining our efforts and actively cooperating with all law enforcement agencies to make our work more effective. I am confident that this Center will help in the search for missing persons during the hostilities and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine," said Yurii Malashko, head of the local military administration.
What is the solution?
The Center aims to improve the efficiency of investigative and search work and to establish constant communication between police officers and the families of missing persons.
"This center is essential for recording and investigating crimes against humanity committed by Russian troops against Ukrainians on Ukrainian soil. The civilized world needs to know what sacrifices our people are making because of this unmotivated war waged against Ukraine," said Metinvest Group's Chief Operating Officer, Alexander Mironenko.
How does it work?
Over 40 police officers will work in the center for the search for missing persons, including investigators, criminal police officers, cyber police officers, and forensic specialists. As noted, they will use operational, procedural, agent and intelligence methods to search for people in the region and neighboring regions.
The officers will interview citizens who have reported missing persons, collect and process all the information to establish the possible whereabouts of the missing persons, whether they are in captivity, abroad, or to prove the fact of their death.
The center will be used to take DNA samples from biological relatives of missing persons and subsequently appoint forensic examinations.
