A Ukrainian embassy has begun its operations in West Africa, in the capital of Ghana, Accra.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at first, it will function as a temporary chargé d'affaires, Rubryka reports.

The ministry reports that before the appointment of an ambassador, the Ukrainian embassy in Ghana will operate at the level of a temporary chargé d'affaires. The institution will carry out a wide range of functions:

  • Develop political contacts,
  • Strengthen economic ties,
  • Provide consular services for Ukrainians and Ghanaians.

"Last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tasked the Ukrainian diplomatic service with opening new embassies in Africa. I am pleased to announce that the first one has already started working in Ghana. We will be opening more in the future," said Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

What we known about new embassies

As reported earlier, Minister Kuleba embarked on his second tour of African countries in May. The objectives of the visits included:

  • Involving states in Zelensky's peace formula,
  • Seeking support for the "grain corridor,"
  • Creating new opportunities for Ukrainian business.

Ukraine has already agreed with Mozambique, Rwanda, and Ghana to open diplomatic missions.

The government has identified ten African states where new Ukrainian embassies will be opened in 2023.

According to Kuleba, this is part of the strategy to develop relations with African countries and counter Russian influence globally. Expanding diplomatic presence will also open new opportunities for the Ukrainian state, businesses, and citizens.

Earlier, it was reported that Zelensky appointed ambassadors to Nigeria and Argentina.

During the first-ever visit to Rwanda, Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba held negotiations in the capital, Kigali, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Vincent Biruta, announcing the opening of an embassy in the country.
