Russian forces shell evacuation train at Kherson railway station: one police officer killed, civilians wounded
Russian forces shelled the railway station in the southern city of Kherson, hitting an evacuation train, Rubryka reports, citing the statement of the Ukrainian Railways Ukrzaliznytsia.
"As a result of the shelling of Kherson, the station and rolling stock of Ukrzaliznytsia were damaged. Currently, there is information about several injured workers. Passengers are in a bomb shelter," the statement said.
The company announced that after stabilizing the situation, they plan to transfer people by bus to Mykolaiv, where reserve cars are already prepared to transport over 100 passengers to a safe place.
"The situation is under control, and the railway workers are ready to continue operations," said Ukrzaliznytsia.
Due to the shelling of the Kherson railway station, a police officer was killed, and two others were hospitalized with shrapnel wounds, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported.
"Kherson. Evening. About 140 civilians were waiting for an evacuation train at the railway station. At this time, the enemy began a massive shelling of the city," he wrote.
According to Klymenko, police officers on duty at the station immediately started evacuating people. Thanks to the clear actions of the police, everyone was successfully moved to safe locations. Two civilians with shrapnel wounds are receiving medical assistance.
"Unfortunately, as a result of the shelling, a police lieutenant from the Kirovohrad region was killed. He was serving in Kherson as part of a combined unit. He received a fatal injury during the evacuation. Our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased…" the minister said.
Currently, two more police officers are in the hospital with shrapnel wounds.
"Despite the risks, the police always serve and protect. At the cost of their own health and life," said the minister.
The head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, showed what the railway station looked like in the first minutes after the Russian strike.
