Ukraine receives nearly €1 mln worth of confiscated cars from Latvia's drunken drivers

This year, Latvia handed over to Ukraine more than 270 cars that were confiscated from drunk drivers for a total amount of about one million euros.

Delfi reported that.

What is the problem?

Since February 2023, Latvia has implemented a law allowing for confiscating vehicles from drivers under the influence, intending to support Ukrainian society. The Latvian parliament, also known as the Seimas, passed amendments to the Law on the Support of the Civilian Population of Ukraine in February, which permit the transfer of such confiscated vehicles to the Ukrainian government at no cost.

What is the solution?

For almost a year of this law, Ukraine has already received 271 cars for a total amount of 903,453 euros. The first seized cars, which Latvia promised to transfer, arrived in Ukraine in March 2023.

Currently, the government is preparing documents for transferring 34 more cars to Ukraine, estimated at 161,880 euros.

How does it work?

Cars are delivered to Ukraine by the "Twitter-convoy" initiative under the leadership of  Reinis Pozņaks.

"Twitter-convoy" started work in February 2022. During the project's existence, more than 1,100 cars with a total value of about 2 million euros were sent to Ukraine from Latvia.

For reference:

Earlier, Rubryka reported that Latvia initiated the creation of a coalition of drones to support Ukraine.

Furthermore, Latvia has significantly bolstered the military training for Ukrainian soldiers.
