Putin has decided to continue the war until the final victory – Borrell
Top EU official Josep Borrell is convinced that the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will not be satisfied with the occupation of only part of Ukraine and is ready to fight until the final victory, The Guardian reports.
The European official emphasized that the existence of the bloc is at stake in Ukraine, so it is necessary to pay attention to the danger "emanating from a great power" that threatens European democracy.
"If we do not quickly change course, if we do not mobilize all our capabilities, this will allow Putin to win the war in Ukraine. What is important is what we can do to prevent Russia from winning the war. What are we ready to do? Are we really ready to do what is necessary? This is the question we must ask ourselves."
The EU diplomat explained that the Russian president cannot be satisfied with a "piece of Ukraine" and allow the rest of the territory to belong to the bloc.
Borrell also believes that the Russian dictator is counting on the fact that the US presidential election will create a more favorable scenario for him.
"Therefore, we must prepare for a high-intensity conflict for a long time. Putin has decided to continue the war until the final victory," he said.
Borrell reiterated that Putin had miscalculated the strength of his army, the strength of the Ukrainian resistance, and the Western world's reaction to his actions.
"Russia has never been able to become a nation. It was always an empire with the tsar, with the Soviets, and now with Putin. It is a constant of Russia, and its political identity, and as a result a threat to his neighbours – and particularly to us."
