Germany allocates €88 mln in aid for winter energy security in Ukraine

Germany has provided Ukraine with a winter aid package worth over €88 million through the European Energy Community. 

Rubryka reports, referring to a joint press release by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The federal government is providing an additional €88.5 million to the European Energy Community. The Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection is allocating €54.3 million through KfW (the German state bank that finances development programs worldwide on behalf of the German government), and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs is providing €34.2 million," the press release said.

Both ministries said that in the second winter of the Russian invasion, Russian aviation continued to target Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Ukraine utilizes the Energy Support Fund, among other things, to finance energy sources, spare parts, and equipment such as transformers and generators, which help sustain Ukraine's energy supply.

Ukrainian energy workers can use it for the repair of destroyed substations and power plants to continue providing the population with electricity and heat.

Another portion of the funds will be used for projects transitioning to green energy, such as photovoltaic systems on public buildings and the green reconstruction of Ukraine.

At the end of last year, the federal government already paid €129.5 million to the energy support fund. Thus, German participation has increased to €218 million.

Germany remains the largest donor to the fund, which has raised about €400 million since February 2022. The European Energy Community conducts tenders for the purchase of goods and monitors the use of funds.

Contributions to the energy support fund are part of this year's winter package from the federal government to Ukraine, totaling over €1.6 billion, which also includes military contributions to air defense, support for development policies, and humanitarian aid.

German Assistance

On October 14, Germany handed over the multi-purpose tracked all-terrain vehicles Bandvagn 206, vehicles for border guards, and 50 drone detection systems to Ukraine.

On October 11, Germany announced a new military aid package to Ukraine worth about €1 billion. The package includes additional air defense systems, tanks, and ammunition.

During a visit to Kyiv on November 21, the German Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, announced a new aid package for Ukraine.

Also, on December 14, Germany announced a new military aid package with ammunition and equipment for Ukraine's Armed Forces. The package includes:

7390 projectiles of 155 mm caliber for Ukrainian artillery of Western models,

47040 rounds of 40 mm caliber for automatic and hand-held grenade launchers.

As Rubryka reported, the second Patriot system promised by Germany to be handed over to Kyiv will be operational in Ukraine later this year.
