Survey: Majority of Ukrainians want fastest possible punishment for corrupt officials
A recent survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology shows 55% of Ukrainians want the quickest possible punishment for corrupt officials, even if it involves breaking the law.
Experts have concluded that the less respondents trust the courts, the greater the demand for punishment as quickly as possible, even in violation of the law.
42% believe that the punishment should strictly adhere to the legal framework, even if it takes more time. The remaining 3% are yet to form an opinion on the matter.
Among respondents trusting the courts, 41% say they need to be targeted as soon as possible. At the same time, the number of respondents who do not trust the courts is 63%.
The KIIS added that a similar trend can be observed in terms of trust in the police. Its polls show that after a large-scale war, corruption is the No. 1 problem for Ukrainians.
Before the invasion (namely, in October 2020), KIIS asked about the overall mechanism of punishing officials, when 67% of respondents said that "certain politicians should be judged long and hard according to the law, even if it takes a long time."
Sociologists say that in December, they adapted the questions to the current context of the fight against corruption.
The second part of the poll shows that Ukrainians believe that corruption and war remain the country's main problems. They are even more concerned about corruption in the future recovery than the recurrence of hostilities.
