USAID upgrades lighting systems at road borders of Volyn and Transcarpathia regions
On December 6, the USAID project "Economic Support of Ukraine" (USAID Project) began the modernization of lighting systems at key crossing points on the border with Poland and Slovakia by replacing and installing 479 LED lamps.
USAID's "Economic Support of Ukraine" project reported that on Facebook's page.
What is the problem?
Crossing points with neighboring Poland and Slovakia are important export gateways of Ukraine and are strategically important in the country's export logistics.
Timely and essential upgrades such as these lighting systems improve the overall functionality of the border crossing points' infrastructure. Therefore, such updates are important to ensure the uninterrupted flow of cargo from Ukraine, which guarantees grain export.

"Passing points have become a strategically important area of development, support for export and import, including our weapons. At the beginning of the war, part of the border was closed; the ports were actually closed. At the same time, we made a huge leap towards European integration. We thank our partners for their help. We have started implementing changes from our side at checkpoints that will increase comfort for users," says Mustafa Nayyem, head of the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine.
What is the solution?
In early December, with the replacement and installation of 479 LED lamps, the USAID Project "Economic Support to Ukraine" (USAID Project) began modernizing lighting systems at key crossing points on the border with Poland and Slovakia.
Work will continue throughout December and early January.
"Modernization of border crossing points (BCPs) is an important component of strengthening the export-logistics infrastructure in general. The points on the border with Poland and Slovakia are crucial for us. The two BCPs, on which work is currently underway, are among the nine crossing points where the USAID Project will carry out rapid modernization. New lighting systems will improve the operation of the checkpoints and significantly help smooth traffic through them," commented Alexander Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, Minister of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure of Ukraine.
How does it work?
These two border crossing points (BCPs) are among nine priority BCPs. The USAID Project is strengthening Ukraine's export logistics infrastructure through rapid modernization to increase operational efficiency, including ports, rail, and road transport.
"Each step in the modernization of Ukraine's infrastructure opens up new horizons for its economic development and international integration. The systematic renewal of key border crossing points strengthens Ukraine's export power and is a symbol of resilience and progress in the face of challenges. These efforts provide a brighter road for transport and a brighter future for the country," says Timothy Madigan, director of the USAID Economic Support to Ukraine Project.
In 2023-2026, within the framework of the Project "Economic Support of Ukraine" (USAID Project), USAID will allocate 115 million US dollars to support the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine (State Reconstruction), "Ukrzaliznytsia" (UZ) and the State Customs Service for modernization border crossing points (BCP) to improve the volume of trade and export of grain.
Note that the USAID Project is working on the modernization of border crossing points for:
- increasing operational efficiency,
- improvement of cargo transportation logistics,
- increase in trade volumes,
- export of grain and transport flows in general.
Thus, on December 6, the USAID "Economic Support of Ukraine" project delivered and installed a 50 kW generator at a railway border crossing point (BCP) in the Volyn region.
