Romania admits Russian drone crash within its borders

During the Russian drone attack on Ukraine, an Iranian-made Shahed crashed in Romania, as officially confirmed by the military.

In a deserted area about 4 km upstream from Grindu, a 1.5-meter-deep crater was discovered after a Russian drone crashed on site.

During the attack, the Romanian army's radar surveillance system detected a possible violation of airspace. The signal was detected at a low altitude on the route towards the village of Grindu, Tulcea County.

An F-17 fighter jet and a Eurfighter aircraft belonging to Germany were patrolling the entire territory.

Romania confirmed the downing of a Russian Shahed on its territory.

"Measures have been taken to ensure the security of the area and the relevant structures have been notified to collect evidence and conduct investigations in accordance with established procedures," the press service said.

The Romanian defense ministry condemned Russia for its attacks on objects and elements of civilian infrastructure in Ukrainian Danube ports, which contradict the norms of international humanitarian law.

Later, Ambassador Necualesco said that Romania summoned the Russian ambassador because of the downing of a Shahed drone on the country's territory during a nighttime terrorist attack on Ukraine.

The Romanian MFA  protested the downing of the terrorist country's Shahed and called for an end to constant attacks on the Ukrainian population and civilian infrastructure, and irresponsible escalation of the security situation.

Meanwhile, 41 drones were shot down over Ukraine on the night of December 14, 39 drones over the south, including 32 drones in the Odesa region.

On the night of Monday, September 4, during the massive shelling of Ukraine, Russian Shahed kamikaze drones crashed and exploded in neighboring Romania.

At first, the Romanian MFA denied that Russian drones had exploded on its territory. At the same time, the ministry emphasized that it considers these Russian attacks unjustified and contrary to international humanitarian law.

On September 5, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis also said that "no parts of drones" or any other devices had fallen on the country's territory.

However, later, President Klaus Iohannis acknowledged the downing of the drone and stated that after examining the area, fragments that "may be from a drone" were found.
