Ever since the new stage of war, Russian forces have been targeting Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, damaging and destroying hundreds of medical facilities.

The eastern Sumy region suffered systematic destruction of hospitals in the first days of the all-out war. However, authorities launched a restoration program to bring back doctors and patients, such as one in the liberated Trostyanets.

What is the problem?

Trostyanets was under occupation by Russian troops for 31 days. During this time, the enemy forces destroyed the region's medical infrastructure. The Trostyanets Primary Health Care Center (PHC) units had 8 out of 18 paramedic stations and six outpatient clinics being damaged.

A Russian tank shelled and damaged the premises of the city hospital, where the second floor housed the outpatient clinics of the health care center. The shelling also damaged paramedic stations in four nearby villages.

What is the solution?

The joint efforts of the local authorities and allies aided the Trostyanets PHC to be completely restored. Now, the healthcare facility continues to operate and provide medical care to the region's residents.

How does it work?

The reconstruction is a vital project of the Recovery Agency, the state's department responsible for Ukraine's post-war restoration. About 400 patients, both adults and children, receive medical care daily. The Agency is working on improving the quality of medical services and ensuring the comfort of patients and staff.

The contractors have already dismantled the damaged porches near the building, and now are finishing the work on breaking off the plaster on the walls and dismantling the brick partitions and floor screed.

The project envisages interior decoration, floor repair, and replacement of damaged window and door units. The water supply, sewerage, heat supply, heating, and electricity systems will also be completely repaired.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russia has damaged 1,480 medical facilities and destroyed another 195. Over 400 medical facilities have been fully restored, while 22 medical facilities in the Sumy region have been also rebuilt.
