Ukraine strengthens energy independence with three new powerful gas wells

In November, Ukraine's largest gas producer, UkrGasVydobuvannya, commissioned three new high-flow wells, collectively providing over 400,000 cubic meters of gas daily. 

Two of them are newly drilled, and the third one has been restored from the liquidation fund, Rubryka reports, referring to the company's press service.

The Ukrainian state-owned gas company announced a new exploration well that was drilled on a recently discovered deposit. The drilling location was determined based on previously conducted 3D seismic surveys. Another new appraisal and exploitation well was drilled on an old deposit that has been in operation for over 50 years. Experts conducted a thorough analysis of the development status, assessed the remaining potential of gas-condensate deposits, and identified the location of the new well. 

The restored well had been in the liquidation fund for 35 years. Specialists performed extensive repair and well-liquidation work and prepared the well for gas production. As reported by the press service, an external contractor successfully performed a two-stage hydraulic fracturing, resulting in a high flow rate.

In 2022, Ukraine extracted 18.5 billion cubic meters of gas, with 4.3 billion coming from private companies. The daily gas production in Ukraine is approximately 50 million cubic meters.

Earlier, as reported by Rubryka, UkrGasVydobuvannya discovered a gas deposit in the Carpathians, previously considered depleted. During testing, the well, at a depth of 1,600 meters, produced a record influx of gas for the western region in the last 20 years — over 200,000 cubic meters per day.

The company also announced drilling two high-flow wells: one exploratory on a recently discovered deposit and the other operational on a deposit over 50 years old. The results of drilling the latter well allowed an increase in gas extraction from the deposit by 156,000 cubic meters.
