United to win: Canada to allocate almost $1 billion to help Ukrainian forces

Canada will allocate military assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for CA$ 1.3 billion (over US $947 million), to be disbursed by 2026. 

The Canadian government announced the new package in an economic report released on its website, Rubryka reports.

According to the document, the funds will be provided to Ukraine over a period of three years:

  • From 2023 to 2024, Ukraine will receive CA$ 816,000.
  • In 2024-2025, the Ukrainian army will receive assistance amounting to CA$ 318,000.
  • From 2025 to 2026, the aid will be CA$ 197,000.

Military assistance to Ukraine is recorded as zero in the report starting from 2026.

The Canadian government requested the House of Representatives of the Parliament to provide CA$ 500 million (approximately $362 million) in military aid for Ukraine.

Canada's assistance to Ukraine

Since January 2022, Canada has already allocated over $8.9 billion to Ukraine for various support, including $4.95 billion in direct financial support and over $1.8 billion in military aid.

In early October, Canada provided Ukraine with a new defense assistance package for combat operations during the cold season, including Leopard 2 tanks, air defense systems, artillery for armored vehicles, and ammunition. Additionally, 200 Senator armored vehicles, previously promised by Canada, have been produced and transferred to Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces have also received a batch of advanced armored vehicles.

Since the illegal occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, Canada has imposed sanctions on over 2,600 individuals and entities. In late October, representatives of Canada proposed to create a coalition of countries to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children abducted and deported by Russia

In September 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Canada for the first time since the beginning of the war.
