Ukrainian women's fencing team celebrates first World Cup win in seven years
Ukraine's women's national fencing team secured a victory against the South Korean fencing team with a score of 41:40 in the final of the World Cup stage held in Lignano, Italy.
This marks their first win since 2016, Suspilne Sport reports.
The Ukrainian team included Vlada Kharkova, Olena Kryvytska, Inna Brovko, and Dzhoan Feybi Bezhura.
On their way to the final, the Ukrainian fencers defeated Estonia (39:34), Italy (45:36), and Hong Kong (45:40).
In the final match of the World Cup stage, the Ukrainian team faced South Korea, featuring Olympic 2020 medalists and world champions Kan Yeon Mi and Son Se Ra.

The intense competition concluded with Ukraine emerging victorious with a score of 41:40.
"This is the first gold in women's saber for the team since October 14, 2016, when Ukraine triumphed at a stage in Suzhou, China. Back then, Ukraine also defeated South Korea in the final," said the publication.
In Olympic qualification, Ukraine secured the fifth spot and currently holds the title of the best European team that hasn't yet secured a direct spot in the 2024 Games. Consequently, Ukraine is now in contention for an Olympic license through the continental quota.
In other news, Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchykh was among the 11 nominees for the prestigious "World Athlete of the Year 2023" award, as determined by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
In March, in Brussels, Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchykh, the only athlete to clear a height of 2.00 meters, won the gold medal at the Diamond League stage. In September, after winning two silver medals, the Ukrainian athlete triumphed at the World Championships, becoming the world champion in the high jump for the first time in her career, making her the second Ukrainian to achieve this title.
