War-affected Irpin in Kyiv region starts reconstruction of its largest housing complex

Ukraine's Irpin started restoring its Irpin Lipky housing complex, which Russian forces seriously damaged during the hostilities in February-March 2022.

Over 300 residents lost their homes there, says head of Kyiv military administration Ruslan Kravchenko.

What is the problem?

During the intense fighting in the spring of 2022, Irpin was 75% destroyed by Russian shelling, leaving 100,000 citizens without their homes. Thirty-seven apartment buildings were declared unsuitable for further stay.

About $850 million is needed to restore residential buildings in Irpin, while another $150 million is vital for infrastructure. Numerous volunteers and international charitable organizations are involved in restoring houses damaged by the war.

What is the solution?

The Irpin Lipki residential complex is being restored at the expense of the State Fund for Eliminating the Consequences, costing over $15 million.

The facade and inter-floor floors were damaged, windows and doors were smashed, and internal utilities and communications were destroyed.

How does it work?

Repair crews are currently doing restoration work by welding metal structures, straightening concrete walls, and cleaning up the remains of the damage.

The building has 206 apartments on 11 floors. The total area is almost 15,000 square meters. The work was launched in October this year and should be completed within a year, the press release said.

After all the reconstruction and repair work is completed, 206 families can return to their homes.

Oleksandr Kubrakov, Vice Prime Minister for the Restoration, says over 300 regional projects worth $290 million were approved for funding.

These are projects that help bring life back to the affected communities, restore destroyed housing, critical infrastructure, hospitals, schools and kindergartens. In 2023, Ukraine's state budget allocated at least $1.3 billion to eliminate the consequences of armed aggression.
