Ukrainian farmlands to be demined with help from AI software – economy ministry
Ukraine's Ministry of Economy believes that data-based approach can assist well with humanitarian demining in Ukraine, according to the press release.
What is the problem?
Ukraine's economy ministry reported that since the beginning of this year, over 225,000 hectares of agricultural land have been surveyed in Ukraine during mine clearance. The result is almost half of the land identified for priority return to economic use.
The timeframe for demining the entire territory will be predicted only after the war is over, but priority demining, including of agricultural land, can be completed within 5 years.
What is the solution?
The ministry has already formed a comprehensive strategy for information management of humanitarian demining based on a data-driven approach.
The team presented a demo version of the unique project at the First International Donor Conference on Humanitarian Demining in Ukraine, which took place in Zagreb on October 11-12, 2023.
How does it work?
The US-based technology company Palantir, which specializes in big data analytics, will help implement the plan.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, we will analyze big data to make quality decisions, set priorities, and understand the needs and resources to be attracted to help demine Ukrainian land faster, said Yulia Svyrydenko, Minister of Economy.
The system will be able to analyze data on potentially mined areas, combine it with data from additional sources, such as social or critical infrastructure facilities, and generate options for higher-priority demining routes.
Previously, on 29 September 2023, the Federal Council approved a CHF 100 million package to demine civilian and agricultural areas in Ukraine and aid the country's recovery.
